The perfect floorboards?

I've had this picture tucked away in my files for a long, long time. Why? Because the next house we renovate or build these are the floorboards I'd like to grace my floors (i.e. the boards on the right hand side).  At present we have very, very dark brown floorboards and as much as I love them they are an absolute pain to keep clean - they show up every single little speck of dust and dirt.  Anyway, what has prompted me to post this pic now is that my girlfriend Alex and her husband are at present building a gorgeous home in the seaside suburb of Williamstown and she's currently making decisions about floorboards...so really I'm posting them for her.  You can click on the image for a better/closer view of the boards.

So dear blog readers, do you have any suggestions about colour/stain/width/cleanliness of particular types of floorboards? I'm sure this information would be a great help to my lovely friend Alex. Thanking you in anticipation of your wonderful, insightful suggestions.

Lee :)

I love the colour of floorboards. I know blacks and darks are so in but they are pain to keep clean.

You may think I have issues...but, we have white floorboards in our bedroom and our two little boys watch movies in there, drive cars over them, eat snacks in front of the tv in there...and they NEVER get dirty...EVER. They are SO easy to clean and like you we have darkish boards in the rest of the house that will need re sanding/staining again soon and I am trying to convince Mic to let me paint all the boards white. If you want to see, I done a post on how I done it and what we used.

well I'm a fan of timber too, specially dark stain, but we are having vinyl timber look in our new home because it's cheaper, no maintenance/upkeep, warmer under foot, glasses don't break when dropped on it and soft under foot! Lurvely...

I'm with you. Those floorboards are pretty nifty. I have terra cotta tiles in my home (every room) and I love them but, my next cottage is getting all floorboards - and not too dark.

I have lovely wide (130)spotted gum floorboards. They are a beautiful brown, not too dark, not too blonde with rivers of grey running through them. I love living on a 'living, breathing floor'. It changes as we live on it (depending on humidity and rain) but it's as tough as they get. I dropped a teppanyaki plate on it in the kitchen... small scratch... I was expecting to see the dirt below! Mine are finished with a satin finish, not a gloss. They are so easy to clean, don't leave streak marks and don't show the dirt unless it's like a whole breadroll under the bench! I am so happy with them I will use the same again in my next project! A-M xx
